Windows Server & SQL Licensing from MAP data

Licensing Microsoft Server Products for use in Virtual Environments–VLB - p3 Dec 2009 / p4 Jan 2013:

“You run an instance of software by loading it into memory and executing one or more of its instructions. Once this has occurred, an instance is considered to be running (whether or not its instructions continue to execute) until it is removed from memory”

Assessing Windows Server Licensing (July 2010) -– Additional Resources link in MAP

Quote Page 11 Point 4:

“The Host Summary tab shows how many VMs (Guest Machines) each physical server hosts. It counts both active and inactive VMs, although you only need to count (and license) active VMs

The document then shows an example of 8 active VMs which are listed under the heading of “Running

The terms found in sample documents from MAP for VM status are Running, Not Started and Unknown.

If an instance is running then it is clearly active.

  1. What term would MAP show in the Virtual Machine Status for any inactive VM – Not Started?

(For licensing purposes this would fit with the definition of running an instance quoted above)

  1. What does the term Unknown mean in the Virtual Machine Status of MAP data (active – inactive)?

Assessing SQL Server Licensing (May 2011) – Additional Resources link in MAP

Only “Running” instances of SQL are considered when counting SQL licences irrespective of the physical or virtual environment. The other term used by MAP in SQL Service State is “Stopped”.

  1. Has an instance recorded as “Stopped” in MAP never actually been running or has it been removed from memory because if it has been running but not removed from memory then the definition above would suggest that it should still be considered a running instance for licensing purposes contrary to the method outlined in the above named document when assessing SQL Licensing?

Hi everyone,

It's my first time to install MAP 4.1. My machine is a Windows XP Professional SP2 x86 and I've installed all the requirements but when I run the MAP 4.1 installer, it says that I don't have .net 3.5 even if I have it installed. Below is a screenshot of my desktop. Any inputs are highly appreciated, thanks!

MAP 8.5 doesn't display licensing status for all mapped devices on the network.

Hi there, Hope you're doing great.

Would any one help on the issue of MAP 8.5 tool. I went to map a network for a client institution and MAP displayed 168 computers on their network, which was really true. However, on the volume Licensing section, it could generate report for only 23 devices. Computers on the network are OEM licensed, with a few others having FPP license. What would be the reason for MAP to not generate report for the rest of the devices? Thanks

Quick question... where are the log files for the MAP toolkit "collect performance data" located?  I am having issues connecting with WMI and all I get is a "failed" message.  There has to be a log somewhere...

Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit not for new deployments

The microsoft assessment and planning toolkit is a great tool as long as you already have an enviroment but what about if you are actually Planning a New Enviroment? Why doesnt this tool take that into account? There used to be excellent planning tools out there but it seems micrsoft has either removed these or put them in the partner only section so microsoft and partners can charge for this service. If thats the way you want to do it then fine please let us know though.

Hi All,

We will start SAM project at our customer. They are using thin clients with terminal services in a large measure.

Are there any practicular advice for MAP Toolkit in this environment?

How to determine thin clients and desktop/notebook users? (should i check the user profiles folder on the terminal server?)

Thank you!

IEMigrationAssessment issues reporting Chrome

$

Collection server:
Windows 2008 R2
SQL 2008 R2
MAP 8.5

Clients:
Windows XP SP3
Windows 7 enterprise SP1

Issue:

The generated IEMigrationAssessment document doesn't appear to be able to properly locate all Chrome installations.  We use the Google Chrome for Business MSI package (which installs into %PROGRAMFILES%\Google\) vs the per-user install of typical installer.  IEMigrationAssessment reported that 12 out of 400+ PCs have Chrome, which is vastly under reported.

Details:

I know MAP was able to collect/harvest that Chrome was installed by directly querying the MAP database.  For example, the following query returns over 250 workstations.

SELECT
	ComputerSystemName
	,ProductCode
	,DisplayName
	,DisplayVersion
	,InstallDate
	,InstallLocation
FROM
	Core_Inventory.Devices
	INNER JOIN Win_Inventory.ProductsUninstall ON Core_Inventory.Devices.DeviceNumber = Win_Inventory.ProductsUninstall.DeviceNumber
where
	DisplayName like 'google chrome%'
ORDER BY
	DisplayName
	,DisplayVersion
	,ComputerSystemName

Thoughts?

It appears that reports are being generated as requested.  I see entries below in the log indicating so, but I search my entire local drive & can't find them.  How do I determine where these reports are ???  I have looked in the default location, but nothing there either.

VMware inventory (no vcenter) - Cannot Scan Host machine

$

Hi

I am having trouble getting MAP to scan a host vmware machine (ESXi 5.1). I have been through the forum and have tried the options. I can only connect from the MAP machine through the web.

- All discovery methods tried

- No vcenter, only direct connection

- Managed Object Browser activated

- certificate validation for port 443 turned off. Connecting through the web give the 'untrusted certificate' page which I can ignore (trust anyway). Port 443 confirmed as the connected port.

- log on credentials work as connection confirmed through a browser.

- virtual machines are being scanned.

Have I missed another potential problem area in another thread? I am new to this and have been through several threads already. Apologies if this is a repeat but I believe I have tried everything.

Any help is most appreciated.

regards,

Kigen

Local Credentials

Hello.

I've faced a problem when I attempt to use local credentials to inventory a machine. Follows some problem's aspects:

  1. When I try to use the domain administrative credentials, it works fine.
  2. When I try to use a local administrative credentials of the same machine, it doesn't work.
  3. If I attempt to inventory another machine out of the domain using its local administrative credentials, it doesn't work too.
  4. The message on the step 2 and 3 is "Access Denied".
  5. All the ports and settings requested for MAP Toolkit are defined.
  6. I'm using the version 8.5.

I'll appreciate any help.

Thx in advance.

Citrix XenServer's being classified as "physical" Machine Type in Hardware Inventory

$

Hi everyone,

We've been working in an environment where Citrix Xen is of large use and while digging through our results, noticed that in one of the MAP 8.0 reports, Hardware Inventory Results for All Computers, all of our XenServer's were showing as having a "Machine Type = Virtual" where this this not the true case.

Are you able to comment on what information is used to make the decision "Virtual vs. Physical"? And these Xen machines are not showing as Virtual as they should be?

Please let me know if you have any additional questions or information I can provide to help.

Thank you,

-Ken

Unable to map users on desktops

Hi! My first post here.

I am using the MS Assessment and Planning toolkit to collect information from 2500 clients that we are going to upgrade to Windows 7 from XP. I am able to collect information about everything (installed applications, hardware, etc) except for user information. The WMI scan is reported as succsessful, but all cells and reports that should contain data about users are blank (I have same issues from both XP and Windows 7 clients).

Can a AD-policy or disabled service cause it?

I have tested it in a similar VLAN where they run the new image and there I can see logged on users in the reports.

Is the application able to map users, installed software and local printers from thin clients?

Windows 8 OEM key from BIOS

Hi,

does the MAP toolkit scans, whether there is Windows 8 OEM key in the BIOS?

I wish to get a list of all computers in a domain with Windows 8 OEM license. In the MAP database (completed full inventory in MAP) I see a table "OEMData", but it is empty, although there are some computers with the Win8 OEM. Maybe some combintation of tables / views can give me this information?

How does MAP display Virtual Processor counts in different reports

$

When licensing SQL per VM by core, the terms virtual processor (or virtual thread or vCPU) and virtual core are interchangeable as they mean the same thing from a licensing perspective. It is important to identify the data in MAP that is a count of the number of Virtual Processors per VM as each vCPU requires a SQL core licence subject to a minimum of 4 per VM.

1. From reading the MAP sample data of 220713 it appears that theTotal Number of Virtual Processors shown in the SQL Server License Tracking tab of the SQL Server Usage Tracker Report is the same as theVirtual Machine Number of Cores shown in the Hyper-V Host and Guest Details tab of the VM Report (Virtual Processor = Virtual Core), Is this correct?

2. In respect of the data in the Virtual Machine Number of Processors&Virtual Machine Number of Cores columns of the VM report, please can you explain what the data represents in each column and how MAP calculates those values?

3. I suspect that the column headings are misleading to me and that Virtual Machine Number of Processors = Physical Processors (also shown as Number of Processors when referring to VMs in the SQL Server Instance Details of the SQL Server Usage Tracker report) that are actually supporting the VM and that Virtual Machine Number of Cores = Virtual Processors (vCPUs) that are actually assigned to the VM. Is this correct?

4. Is the Number of Processors shown for Virtual Machines in the SQL Server Instance Details Tab of the SQL Server Usage Tracker report the result of the following calculation -Logical Processors or Virtual Processors (supporting VM) divided by Cores (Cores) or Threads if HT turned on (LP) perPhysical Processor - as this calculation is the number of Processor Licences required when licensing VMs independently of the Physical Host?

Nigel
